Porto aim to ruin Parkhead party

Porto coach Octavio Machado is confident his side can win their Champions' League clash against Celtic at Parkhead on Tuesday.

The Portuguese champions got off to the best possible start by beating Rosenborg 2-1 in Norway last week and Machado is now setting his sights on another away win.

"Celtic have changed a lot in the last few years," explained the Porto boss. "They broke Rangers' domination of the last decade and are clearly in command of Scottish football nowadays.

"They have a very dynamic and fast team, they are well organised and have some very good players. Nevertheless, we are going there to try to win, so I expect an exciting game."

Machado's counterpart Martin O'Neill will have limited influence on the match after his appeal against a one-match touchline, dressing room and tunnel ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration on Monday.

O'NEILL APPEAL BLOW By Newsroom Staff

CELTIC'S bid to overturn the one-match ban imposed by UEFA on manager Martin O'Neill appears to have failed. Celtic Chief Executive Ian McLeod said: "We understand from the Court of Arbitration that they are unable to overturn a decision by UEFA as it is outside their jurisdiction. "I find it astonishing that there is no right of appeal in this matter as there would be in any other legal matter." Martin O'Neill was sent from the dug-out by the referee at last week's UEFA Champions League match against Juventus in Turin after he protested against the late penalty award for the Italian side. His ban, which will take effect for tomorrow night's Champions League clash with Portuguese side Porto at Celtic Park, prevents the Celtic manager from being in the dug-out, tunnel or dressing room.

Under-21s edge out Dundee By Stephen Sullivan

Monday, September 10

DUNDEE 1 Boylan 63 CELTIC 2 McCann 44, Maloney 49pen

The under-21s' fine start to the season continued as the Bhoys claimed a comfortable away victory at Dundee. Goals either side of half time from Ryan McCann and Shaun Maloney secured the three points for Kenny McDowall's side in a match that saw Morten Wieghorst take another step closer to full fitness.

Celtic started brightly and in seven minutes came close to breaking the deadlock when Maloney intercepted a slack defensive pass from Fattelo Umberto and drove in a low shot that Mathers in the Dundee goal did well to hold.

Just seven minutes later, Maloney was causing problems again, driving to the byline and cutting back for McCann to poke in a shot that was deflected wide for a corner. From the resulting kick, John Paul McGovern curled in a left-foot cross that was headed just over the crossbar by Momo Sylla.

Celtic took the lead a minute before half-time when Sylla sent McGovern free on the right flank and his perfect cross was chested down by Maloney for McCann to fire home from close range.

Celtic came out of the half-time break determined to add to their lead and just three minutes after re-start they did so after Maloney was brought down rounding Mathers in the area. The young striker, who worked tirelessly all afternoon, dusted himself down to take the penalty kick and coolly slotted the ball to the keeper's left.

From that moment, the Hoops looked to be in a comfortable position although they did surrender one goal to their hosts after 63 minutes. Dundee won a corner on the right and when Michael Herbet failed to hold the corner, Colin Boylin was on hand to fire home for Dundee.

However, the goal was not to prove the start of a Dundee revival and Celtic could have added further to their goals tally when Maloney hit the post late on.

The final result doesn't give a fair indication of Celtic's superiority on the day, but the victory was still one enjoyed by all the team.

DUNDEE: (4-4-2) Mathers; Miller, Coyne, Thompson (Vanderdeyl 77), Umberto; Jobb (Watson 74, Beith, Jabloski, Forbes; Boylin, Thomson Subs: Watson, Vanderdeyl, Webster, Narey

CELTIC: (3-5-2) Herbet; Healy, Cocozza, Crainey; McGoivern, McBride, Wieghorst, Sylla, Smith; Maloney, McCann Subs: Miller, Shields, Keogh, Fotheringham, Morrison

NEWS ON OTHER TEAMS IN OUR GROUP

Porto quietly confident of win over Juventus

Porto coach Octavio Machado has promised his team will attack against Juventus in the Champions' League this week, just like they did in the 3-0 defeat of Varzim at the weekend. "Our attitude will be exactly the same. This gives us high hopes," he said.

"But Juventus are stronger this season and, even if they have lost a great player like Zidane, they have signed some extraordinary talents.

"I think they have a more solid, compact and organised team than last year. At the moment, in my opinion, they are the best side in Italy."

Porto playmaker Deco also recognised the difficulty of Wednesday's match, but added that defeating the Serie A giants was a realistic goal.

"It's going to be a very tricky game. We know all their players, they have a world-class squad and they are building a strong group. But that is not enough to beat us at home. We have very good players too," he said.

ROSENBORG WARM UP WITH WIN

(FROM ONEFOOTBALL.COM WEBSITE)

Rosenborg 3 Sogndal 1

Saturday 8th September 2001

Rosenborg blitzed Sogndal with three goals in an impressive first-half display but watching Celtic scouts would have been heartened by some of the weaknesses on display for the new Norwegian league leaders.

Rosenborg are now five points clear at the top of the table, though they have played two games more than second-placed Lillestrom.

After eight minutes, Rosenborg striker Frode Johnsen scored the game's first goal with a beautiful header after Orjan Berg crossed from right.

Five minutes later Havard Flo proved that Nils Arne Eggen still has defensive concerns to shore up before the Champions' League clash with Celtic.

Christer Basma failed to clear the ball, and Flo got the ball with Basma and Erik Hoftun to beat. The former Wolves player tricked them both, and scored.

Seven minutes later Rosenborg took the lead with their second chance of the game. This time Roar Strand scored the goal with a shot from 17 yards. The effort started going along the ground, but after a couple of yards it struck Sogndal player Philip Apelstav, and rose up to lob over over Terje Skjeldestad in the goal.

Four minutes before half-time, Rosenborg scored another lucky goal. After a good attack by the home team, Sigurd Rushfeldt crossed from the right – and Sogndal's Erik Hillestad smashed the ball into his own net.

Sogndal's best chance came when Anders Stasheim headed goalwards but Hassan El Fakiri, making his debut as Rosenborg right-back, headed the ball off the line. Rosenborg have big problems with the right-back position, back, and Eggen was not convinced that El Fakiri proved himself up to the job.

"I can't say for sure, but he had some problems with positioning, especially in the first half. But I don't see that as a problem, because he was better after the break," he said.

Rosenborg dominated the second period but failed to add to their tally.

Rosenborg: Arason, El Fakiri (Johnsen 66), Basma, Hoftun, Saarinen, Berg, Skammelsrud, Strand (Winsnes 66), Brattbakk, (Enerly 85), Rushfeldt, F Johnsen

Sogndal: Skjeldestad, Hillestad, Hillestad, Apelstav, Kalvenes, Sorum, Bolseth, Stadheim, Odegaard, Flo, Fredriksen (Ystaas 66)

Former Celt Bobby Evans dies

by Margot McCuaig

Bobby Evans, 1927-2001

Former Celtic legend and Scotland International Bobby Evans has died of pneumonia at the age of 74. He had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Evans, who is survived by his daughter Margaret and his son Robert, passed away in the Darroch Nursing Home in Cumbernauld on Saturday morning, September 1.

His distinguished career at Celtic began when he signed in July 1944 and he made his debut for the Club in the wartime Regional League on the 19th of August. Bobby, a determined and hard working player earned immediate respect and was a deserved captain when he became the first Celt to lift the League Cup following the victory over Partick Thistle in October 1956. He will, however, be forever remembered in the hearts and songs of Celtic supporters for his part in the 7-1 League Cup win over Rangers in October 1957.

Evans captained his country, amassing a total of 48 Scottish caps, but if his International career was enviable then one only has to look to achievements at Celtic Park to acknowledge his status as all time Celtic Great. Bobby made a total of 535 appearances, scoring 10 goals in Scottish League and Cup competitions, in addition to 14 appearances and 1 goal in the Regional League.

Bertie Auld signed for the Club towards the end of Bobby Evan’s career and today he spoke fondly of his memories for this Celtic Legend. He said “I’m shattered by the news. He was a tremendous Celtic player, and there was no badness in him, on or the Park. He was very warm-hearted and was always happy to help the younger players. He was very good to me when I first joined Celtic. No-one ever had a bad word to say about Bobby.”

Ian McLeod, Celtic Chief Executive, said: "It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of former Celtic player Bobby Evans.

"Bobby played for the club for 16 years, making over 500 appearances and is rightly remembered as a Celtic great.

"He helped the club to the League and Cup double in season 1953/54 and was also a member of the famous team that beat Rangers 7-1 to win the League Cup in 1957.

"The thoughts of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with his daughter Margaret and son Robert at this sad time."

STAN WANTED BY EVERTON

Bulgarian midfielder Stilian Petrov has revealed that he turned down an £8m approach from Everton to stay with Celtic. Ex Rangers boss Walter Smith made the move before the 22-year-old suffered a horrific leg break last season.

Petrov has astounded the Celtic Park medical staff with his speedy comeback and on Saturday played his first competitive game since the injury.

The former CSKA Sofia man helped his country to a 2-0 win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier.

Petrov told The News of the World: "It's true that Everton offered £8m to buy me, but Martin O'Neill said it was too early for me to be sold and that Celtic needed me.

"Maybe I must wait a little while, but he didn't buy a player for my position while I was injured and that's good."
